Marathon speed analysis: How elite runners compare with normal folks

Last year the men's winner of the Bank of America Chicago Marathon crossed the finish line in 2 hours, 9 minutes. And 14 minutes later the women's winner finished. For the next six or so hours, 37,457 more normal runners finished the race. 


Breaking down the race using data from the athletic social network Strava and theChicago Marathon shows that elite runners keep up a blistering pace for all 26 miles while slower runners trail off in the last half of the race. And the slower the runner, from those finishing in 3 hours to more than 5 hours, the slower the runner gets at the end of race.
